Can't get internet page to load

just had the cable internet hooked up on my Inspiron 8400. Connections panel shows that I'm connected to the system but when I try to open a page it says not available. when I go into "ipconfig" it does not show an ip address. Do I have a bad or damaged driver??? Thanks for any help. PS Everything works ok with my laptop. This is the first time the 8400 has been hooked up to high speed internet.

If you are changing the device connected directly to a cable modem then you must do a complete reset of the network everytime you make the change.  Cable modems remember the last device connected and will never allow the connection of another device until a complete reset is performed.   To do the reset, turn everything off.  Wait 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first.  Wait another 2 or 3 minutes, then turn on the device that is now connected to the cable modem.   Again, this must be done everytime you change the device connected.

You would not have this problem if you put a router between your computers and the cable modem and you would have the ability to connect both computers a the same time through the router.   The router would also make your connections safer, since it would provide a hardware firewall.

Try reinstalling the drivers for your ethernet network adapter.
