What kind of internet service do you have, cable or dsl?  If it is cable, are you resetting the modem everytime you change the device connected to the modem?  To reset the modem, you need to turn the modem, router, and all computers off.  Wait 5 minutes, then turn on the modem and wait another 5 minutes.  Finally turn on the device connected to the modem and any other computers involved.   This has to be done every time you change the device making the direct connection to the modem.

if dsl, then you need to set router to PPPoE and most likely enter a username and password in router setup...have you done that?

ok this is the long and short of it.hook up router and set it up as a PPPOE and check the status of the router and says PPPOE auth fails.i have made sure of correct username and password several times.we have pinged it and came out ok,but still same message.i have spent hours on phone with linksys.i don't know what more to do?.

have you tired to get internet without the router in place?  if you can get internet without router, then do a reset on the router and start over...power everything off, connect modem to router, then pc to router, power on router, modem, then pc last.  Go into router setup and set up PPPoE, username and password.  If unsuccessful call tech support for your dsl provider.

hard to imagine 2 bad routers in a row, but anything I suppose is possible.  You could try a cheap dlink router, if it works great, if not, then it's something your probably doing setting it up.
