To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

It looks like you are connecting just fine to the router, but the router is not connecting to the cable modem.   Have been switching the devices connected to the cable modem (i.e. switching between a computer and the router)?  If so, have you been resetting the entire network every time you change the device connected to the cable modem.   This is necessary because the cable modem remembers the address (MAC address) of the device that it was last connected to and will only connect to that device until it is reset.  To reset the network you need to shut off the cable modem, router, and all computers.  Wait 5 minutes (important) then turn on the modem first.  Wait another five minutes then turn on the device that is now connected to the cable modem (either the router or a computer), then, if connecting through a router, turn on any other computers connecting through the router.

Try resetting the router to its default settings by finding the reset button on the back of the router, then pressing and holding it in for 5 seconds.  If that doesn't work, try disabling any firewalls running on your computer to make sure that they have not been misconfigured to block internet access.   Also, if you have both the router and the USB connected to the modem at the same time, you must unplug one of these and do the reset procedure outlined in the previous post.  You cannot leave the USB connection in when connected to the router and you cannot have the router connected at the same time you are trying to use the USB connection.

Thanks but I have tried this already.  I thought that I knew I was connected but I just can't see the web page.  I can't even do a direct connect using USB.  Nothing comes up but once again I can still use email.  Any other thoughts?

It didn't work.  I went to turn off my firewall and try it but that didn't work either.
When I click on Norton and go into personal firewall I am unable to click on networking.  It says,
an error has occurred in the script on this page.
error: unspecified error

based on the information above, you have linksys router and you already reset the router back to factory default, right. however, you ip address is still 192.168.0.1. fyi, the the default ip address of linksys router is 192.168.1.1. therefore, you ip address of your computer is invalid. what you cand do is check first the setting of your tcp/ip. you may click on start > control panel > network connection > right click the local area connection icon first and then click on properties. then, you will see "this configuration uses the ff setting". look for the internet protocol tcp/ip. all options there should be obtain ip address automatically and the dns should be the same. then, click on ok all the way out. same goes with the wireless connection icon. then, restart the computer. check your ip address by clicking start > run > type cmd then ok > on black screen type ipconfig and then hit enter. your ip address should be 192.168.1.x (something) and default gateway should be 192.168.1.1. this will apply for win xp only. for the win me. check first the ip address by clicking on start > run > type commmand and click ok > then ipconfig again. if you have invalid ip restart the computer. please let me know the result so that i could give other solution.

Temporarily uninstall the Norton stuff.  It has been known to cause problems, even when the firewall is disabled.  The fact that you are getting errors when you try to change the firewall settings, indicates that there is a problem with the software.

I've already disabled all of Norton and tried that.  Do I actually have to uninstall it?

Do I actually have to uninstall it?  Yes, isn't that what I said in my last post?

let's us start from the beginning. please follow the following steps, ok?

1. first, to isolate the problem, directly connect your win xp computer to the modem.
2. then, do the power cycle. meaning, power off your computer and then modem. after 30 seconds, power on the modem first and then wait at least 1 minute before you power on the computer.
3. check your ip address and record it. your ip address should be in public address. it should not start with the ip of 192.168.x.x. if however, it start with the said ip address, therefore, your modem is a modem/router.
4. try to ping website. so, go command prompt by clicking on start > run > type "cmd" and click ok > then on the command prompt type in "ping yahoo.com" and then hit . you ping stat should be ping statistics packet sent 4 receive. otherwise, the modem is not connected to the internet. therefore, please contact you isp

if the computer was able to ping the yahoo site:
5. connect you modem back to the linksys router on the internet/wan port of the router. make sure that the internet port light on the front panel is lit-up in solid green. same with the power.
6. connect your computer to port 1 of the router and check la led light.
7. reset the router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds.
8. then, power off router for 15 seconds
9. open internet explorer. on the IE address bar, type in 192.168.1.1 and then hit go
10. leave the user name blank and in the password type-in admin (lower case)
11. under the set-up tab you will see a sub-tab for mac address. click that. and then select clone and then save it.
12. do a power cycle again.

next step will be depends on the result. please let me know.

Thank you all for your help.  I had a friend work on it today and he finally was able to figure it out.  I'm not sure what the problem was, I will let you all know as soon as I find out.

Thanks again.
