cd rom not recognizing cds/ethernet gone

I just reinstalled windows xp in my dell demension e510 and my cd/dvd drive won't recognize any cds, and I've noticed that my ethernet is gone.  I am a beginner at this, and I'm completely stumped!  I can't get online either to be able to download any software.  Anybody out there that can help?  much appreciated!!
