Question

Out of the blue this happened to my XPS gen 2, 3 GHz, (XP home OS) with a BCM V. 92 voicemodem, version 3.5.25 attatched to my com3 port: When I plug the phone line in for ISP it says that the line is already in use, hence computer or phone will not work. Through various combinations of phone jacks and lines I've traced the problem to the port on the modem. Here's some more facts: Comm protocols enabled V.34,V.90 & V.92; modem on hold not enabled; lowered adv. port settings with no result. Queried modem> AT#CLS=?  COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED; Link info.- chars, frames recv'd/sent all 0000's; PROTOCOL: NONE; COMPRESSION: NONE; Reason for last disconnect no dial tone (code 47). Does all this point to a new modem?

Thanks for the link, it's quite possible I could have gotten lightning surge from a freak afternoon storm...in any case it looks as though this modem will be replaced for one with a higher recommendation.....

A good quality internal modem is the USR data hardware model. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?sku=240235-6&c=us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=5558&first=true&page=productlisting.aspx   This modem does not use windows  to function,but uses it own firmware.
