Combination cable and dialup service networking

I have two computers running Win XP and both have ethernet. I would like to share my cable internet service through a network, but know nothing about networking.

Living out here in the Islands we only have one broadband service and it uses a combination of connections. Cable broadband for receiving, and phone line connection for sending. Both the cable and phone line connections run through an old Motorola Surfboard 3100D cable modem that is connected to my computer through the LAN connector.

Is there any way I can network the other computer to my internet connection? If so, what do I need to do it?

I'm not a real expert on this, but based on my own network (surfboard 4100 cable modem to two XP Dells), you will need to get a router. The cable modem cable that now goes to your computer will then go to the router input. The router will have four(usually) output ports. Two of them will be used to feed your computers via ethernet cables. This is for a wired router. If you get a wireless router, then you would have to get wireless ethernet cards for at least one of your computers. More networking information at http://www.practicallynetworked.com/,http://www.linksys.com/products/, and on the Microsoft Windows 98 networking newsgroup (has lots of XP networking stuff). I really do not know if your unusual receive/transmit system will have any bearing on this. Hope this helps.

Roy - Not sure where you are located, but I would encourage you to recheck with your "local broadband" service - the one-way cable modem stuff for the most part was prevelent a few years back but virtually all the cable providers not offer "two-way" cable modem service. Have not seen the dial/cable combo you mention in a really really long time.

Also for one resources for one of the best of info, tips, how-to's, peer support and all that - I would encourage you to check out www.dslreports.com there are many forums there specific to either cable modem service ISPs like Comcast, and so on, as well as forums where you can ask these questions specific of your particular provider. BTW, where are you located and who is your local one and only broadband ISP?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think a router will will, even with this old setup.

Seventy, I live on the island of Saipan which is a Commonwealth of the U.S. and is located in the Pacific about halfway between Japan and the Philippines. I can understand that you haven't seen a setup like ours in yaers, but the only local Broadband service is our local cable TV company. From them we get only CNN Asia and the Fox news channel by satellite, everything else comes on videotape from San Francisco and is a week old when we see it here.

Now you know why we have this broadband setup!

Thanks again everyone, "Just another day in paradise"

Sounds nice! I am surprised they permit you computers!! ehehe.. Perhaps you might want to checkout satilite service but being out there in the rural areas can be tough on technology needs.
