computer dialing long distance

for a few months now the computer automatically dials a long distance number.  it is a diap up access number but it is out of my area so it is long distance.  i have talked with the phone company and they said i would have to block all long distance in order to block the number.  i have searched and searched and dont know why or how the computer dials.  it will do it at like 3 or 4 in the morning when no one is awake, so its doing it by myself.  i have scanned for viruses, scanned for spyware and adware and nothing comes up.  i dont know what else to do, can you help me?  there is only one number in my dial up and that is my local number that my internet provider gave me but somehow this long distance number is in my computer and it dials it.  the number is 608-350-0005.

hmm i just did a search and it says the number is from around madison wisconsin. the number could be getting dialed from a program that u may have installed on your computer. you should try the number and ask whos there?

when you dial the number it sounds like when you are connecting to the internet through dial up. i only have one number in my dialing propeties also.  i was told that it might be a hacker.  i was also told to re boot the computer and it should take care of it, i guess i will have to do that.  thanks

I would use the Ad-aware software and the SpyBot Search and Destroy software to check for Malicious software.  You need to make sure you have the most current versions of their database installed each and every time you use it.

I also use the free version of the Zonealarm firewall.  It will inform you when a program tries to get in or out of your computer and you can decide if you want to allow access or not.  You can also stop all Internet activity with one button click, although I have not tried using that feature with a modem connection, only with my cable modem connection.

If you can't figure out what is causing the pc to dial the number, I would recommend that you unplug the telephone cord from the pc when you aren't using it.  If it continues to be a problem, you could get modular phone connectors and rearrange your phone line so that it's easy to disconnect it when you don't want it to be able to dial.

hope that helps
