Computer lock up

Lately when I go on the net ( I use dial up) my computer dials up and goes to my home page as usual.
However when I attempt a search or try to open my mail, the computer locks up. I can move the mouse but clicking on any program icon or a favorite web site nothing happens. Usually the hour glass symbol appears. I can minimize the net and try opening other programs from my desk top but they lock up also.
Usually after a long time maybe a minute or two all of the programs I clicked on, etc. start opening. Shutting down the net and hanging up my connection doesn't help. Once the programs began to open things go back to normal. I'm running a current version of Norton virus, Microsoft anti spy ware and also
an ad ware program. I've watched my system performance during this lock up and the cpu and memory or not overloaded. I use Bellsouth for my net and email and my home page is Google.

Good lord what a mess to read, how darn hard is it to spell out the words You and Your.
This is not some kids chatroom, over use of the leek speak is childish in a tech forum.
