Computer not seeing Internet Connection
I recently had to reformat my hard drive due to viruses and a poorly set up partition system. However, my computer is a preinstalled XP Home computer, and I don't have the reinstall disk. I used my disk for WIN XP Professional and reformatted. This means that I lost drivers for a number of things. After some time, I managed to sort out my modem issues, and reinstalled the drivers for my modem.
However, the computer still isn't seeing my connection. I connect through Road Runner, through a router (we have three computers). The connection is always on and there's no password or logon name required. Restarting the computer, unplugging/plugging in the ethernet cable, and resetting my modem are all to no avail. None of the internet connection "wizards" are doing me a bit of good.
What am I missing? Please help me.

Yes, all drivers can be downloaded from the Dell web site, but you have to know the model of the computer, as the drivers are specific to the model.

As to downloading the chipsets, can that be done from the Dell website?

It's impossible to give a precise answer without knowing which model computer you have. Still, it sounds like you did not install the chipset drivers and the ethernet network adapter drivers. On most newer model Dell computers, you must install the chipset drivers before attempting to install any other devices and before Windows can recognize many other devices.

Using the service tag, you can find EVERYTHING you need for your computer on the support.dell.com website. Install the Desktop or Laptop files, first, your chipset second then all the rest. Most likely if you open the device manager, your nic card has a question mark next to it. XP can see that it's a NIC card, but can't tell which one it is so it can't use it. You can download them from another pc, or dial up and download directly to that pc then install them.
