>Why do you need to change the computer name to access the university system?

The university system requires unique computer names on each machine on its network -- not my policy, I'd rather not have had to do it. But it's done.

That said, My Network Places on the notebook doesn't show the desktop and vice versa. I've rebooted and tried other simple things, but no luck. I can successfully ping each machine, but they can't otherwise communicate. Firewall issues have been taken care of.

Any thoughts?

Why do you need to change the computer name to access the university system?  I bring my laptop to all kinds of other networks and have never had to change the computer name.  Even if the name is changed, you should still be able to access the network.  Other computers should be able to communicate with yours, although they will have to re-establish communication using the new computer name by re-finding the computer in My Network Places.  I suggest you stick with one computer name and get everything working again with just that one name.

Have you forced My Network Places to find the new name by using "Add Network Place"?
