The wireless network card that you have requires the presence of a wireless network within range of the computer (usually less than 300 feet).  Thus, if you have a wireless router connected to a broadband internet connection in your home, you should be able to connect throughout your home.  Outside your home you will only be able to connected to non-secured networks like are found at some coffee houses, hotels, airports, and bars, or, if you have obtained the permission of the owner of the wireless network you would be able to connect to their secured wireless network.  I hope you didn't expect to be able to connect to the internet anywhere with the wireless network card you have, because that is just not possible.

I am afraid I did. I am still satisfied with it though. And the other question...my mom is going to get a laptop this week and has dial up. Will she need a router too? She also has a wireless card.

This will be hers in her home. She has dial up and just the desktop now. And she wants to go wireless in her house. In my home I have dsl. I had a tough time getting mine to work.

Does she expect to connect to a dialup connection through wireless in your home?  The only way you can do this is if you have another computer that makes the dialup connection and then that computer is connected to the router through an ethernet connection.  The computer making the connection must be running Internet Connection Sharing on the dialup connection and the router must be running in access point mode.  Any computer wishing to connect to that dialup connect by wireless will then be able to do so through the router (running in access point mode).  It is doable, but it is just a lot more complicated than sharing a cable or dsl connection.

Tell her to get a broadband connection like cable and then she will need a wireless router and cable modem to make it work.
