Connected to internet, but sometimes cannot browse web

Hello - I'm running an inspiron 1501 with vista home basic, connected through a linksys WRT54G router to comcast cable isp.  Frequently, the laptop gets in a state where browsers (firefox or IE) can't display web pages.  But, I can VNC out just fine.  And an XP machine on the same network shows no problems. The vista box browser behavior is like this:  browsing happily, then suddenly the next desired page is blank and the status bar says "Connecting to ...." or "Waiting for ...".  Any ideas?  What would cause browsers to fail while the internet connection is healthy?  Oh, and Skpe can't connect at those times either.  Any other apps to try?

thank you

Try to reset Internet explorer. this might solve the problem. I had a similar issue today and reseting Internet explorer resolved the problem.

To reset Internet Explorer settings
  1. Close any Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.

  2. Open a new Internet explorer

  3. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

  5. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.

  6. When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK.

  7. Close Internet Explorer.

Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer.

Hope this will solve the problem you are having.

Kind Regardds
