Connected to Net, Not Working

My computer has been working fine, concerning the internet, but suddenly it just stopped.  I can still connect (the little computer icon comes up, everything says I'm connected) but I can't use the internet (web pages don't open, WMP doesn't read albums from internet, etc.).  It's as if it were not connected, but it says it is.  Any help?

I have a Dimension 4300, with XP.  Norton Internet Security says there are no viruses, spyware, etc.  I've been using the same firewall when it worked and when it suddenly stopped.  Even when it's off, still nothing.  I'm using a cable connection through Comcast.  The internet (same connection) works on my laptop, but will not open anything on my Dimension.  When plugged in, my ethernet light is green.  All necessary modem lights are green also.

I've exhausted my ideas.  Any help out there?  I'd appreciate it.  Thanks.

Windows XP
128 MB SDRAM
16MB ATI Rage Ultra graphics card

V.90 56k modem

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

That indicates that either your network card is bad, the cable is bad, or the modem is bad.  Do the link lights light up on both the modem and near the ethernet port on your computer when the cable is plugged into both devices and both devices are powered on?

I actually don't have a dual cable modem; I just switch the ethernet cable between the two computers (which Comcast said would work and which has been working up until now).  And yes, all the lights on the modem as well as the ethernet port (for each computer separately) light up.

Thanks again.

You cannot just simply switch computers on a cable modem!  The modem remembers which device it was connected to and will not connect to any other device until it is reset.  To reset it, you have to turn everything off, wait 5 minutes, turn on the cable modem first, then wait a few more minutes until the network is synchronized, then turn on the computer.  This must be done everytime you connect a different device to the cable modem.

Thanks for the information.  I actually have been allowing everything to reset, but not that long.  Maybe only a minute or two.  Would that create such a disturbance?
