Connecting to the Internet - Problems

Question

Hey, Last July I purchased the Dell Dimension 9100 - it has served it served i'ts purpose, but as of now, I am having some trouble. I was having trouble uninstalling The Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and, had a bunch of programs and spyware on my computer that I needed to get riid of - so, I though I may as well do a complete format - I used Dell's Application to create a copy of Windows XP on to a CD-R, and, installed it over my old OS - thus deleting all my old data. After XP was reinstalled I decided to go about and rey to get my internet connection working. I have two computers - 1 PowerBook G4 and the Dell Dimension - Up until now, I have had no trouble connecting to the internet, but now, with the Dell, it's giving me problems. I have the network setup - complete with router and ethernet cables - it connects fine on my PowerBook, but when I enter the same info/connection data on the Dell, it refuses to connect. Here's what I am doing, maybe you guys can tell me if I'm doing something wrong. I go to Network connections in the control panel, and create a new one. I make it for browsing the internet, and it is a connection (Sympatico) that has a username and password. I enter the username and password and finish, but, when I try to connect from the Dell, I simply get the message 'Connecting through WAN miniport PPOE error 769 - the specified destination is not reachable'. Could my information be wrong? Am I simply setting it up wrong? The internet is working perfect down here, but I can't get it upstais on the Dell, which I could before. And, I seem to remember, when first setting up my Dell, a Dell internet connection helper - but I can't use any of Dell's applications now as when I reinstalled XP, ALL the applications went Bye-bye, so the only apps I have left are the ones that came with XP SP 2. After you re-installed the OS, did you install the chipset drivers? The chipset drivers should be installed before any other drivers.

How could I go about doing that?

The only discs Dell shipped with my computer are a Modem Helper disc, and a monitor one.

Nothing else.

So, I know of no way to install any drivers, since I don't have a CD with them on it, OR acess to the internet.

Obviously, you have some type of internet access or you couldn't post on this forum or am I missing something?

Yeah - My PowerBook G4 connects to the web without a hitch - it's the Dell I'm having trouble with - sorry if I wasn't clear.

And thanks very much for the link, but, how abouts would I transfer these files to the Dell?

Could I cp[y them to a CD on the PowerBook and then just put that CD in the Dell and install them from there?

I tried downloading the nVidia drivers on this computer and then copying them to a CD-R - but the CD appeared blank when I put it in the Dell.

So, is it going to be possible to download those files on to an iBook and then somehow transfer them to the Dell WITHOUT using the internet? If so, how?

Yes--you can copy them to a CD or USB drive, etc. then load them on the 9100. Good luck!

Well, all is well - I burned the Network card drivers to a CD-R and sucessfully transfered them to the Dell. Thanks very much for the help - I would have never figured it out on my own!
