connecting to the internet

I posted the following message earlier: I have two computers, a dell dimension 4100 and a dell dimension 4700. The 4700 will not connect to the internet. I have direc pc with a 7000 modem. I have a belkin wireless router. Both computers are plugged into the router. The 4100 will connect to the internet but the 4700 will not. I spent hours with the direcpc people, and set up the 4700 manually with the ip address, the gateway and the subnet mask. They told me that I probably had a bad ethernet card. I purchased a linksys etherfast card, and installed it. Still no copnnection. When I use the linksys, I get a connected message, but no connection, and 0 packets sent or received. When I use the onboard ethernet card, I get a limited or no connection message. Since the 4100 will connect, I know that the modem and the router are working. I have tried direct connections with the 4700, and I have tried changing the cables to the port that works with the 4100. I know no other way to try and get connected. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I forgot one important fact. I was connected to the internet with the 4700, but the connection from the satellite to the modem came loose. After I had a new connection put on the cable, I could not connect to the internet. This was the reason for the new ethernet card. I am still stuck. thanks ranjo24

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.  Do this on the 4700 since that is the computer with the problems.

You have a static iP address which will probably not work.  Open Network Connections, right click your Local Area Connection and select Properties from the drop down menu.  Find the Internet Protocl (TCP/IP), select it, then click on the Properties button.  Put a check mark in the box next to "Obtain IP address automatically and, if necessary, put a check mark in the box next to "Obtain DNS server address automatically".  The OK your way out.

I had the automatic ip and dns address checked. The direcpc people had me enter the addresses manually. Since the problem showed up after the cable disconnection, (and possible static charge), I thought it may be a hardware problem. What do you think?

DHCP is still not enabled.  You said the boxes to obtain an ip automatically were checked, but the results from our ipconfig output still show that boxes are not checked.

What I meant to say was that I had the automatic boxes checked and tech support from direcpc had me enter the addresses manually. I have gone back and checked the automatic settings again, and still have no connection. Dhcp shows yes now, but still no connection.

Boot to Safe Mode with Network Support and see if you can connect.  Let me know what happens.
