All the 8400 would need is a wireless PCI card for the two to connect in ad hoc mode.

Moiran,

You would also need a PCI wireless network card in the old computer if you want them to communicate in ad-hoc mode (without a router or access point in between).

And remember AdHoc is wide open and anyone can Associate and look at the shared areas.

Had to look but I'd say yes - when I set up my SMC card using the SMC WLAN utility I can set a WEP key in AdHoc mode.  Learned something there.  Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for all the replies, I know now that connecting the computers is possible.  The rest leaves me confused but I can get local help.  Thanks again.

Moiran.
