Connecting two computers

Question

I have an Inspiron and a Dimension that I would like to connect to transfer data. Can this be done using a USB cable between the two or is some other method better? Thanks for any help you might provide.

Do you have a router?  Or perhaps a crossover cable?

and it's cheaper using a crossover LAN cable too.
