Connecting two Inpirons for game play..

Hello folks,
Ok straight to the point..My friend and I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 each with built in Network Cards: Adapters 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible), blah blah.. We are trying to find out how to cable connect the two laptops so we can play games together... as the games offer direct "TCP/IP" game option, "TCP/IP lan connection" or "IPX Network"..

Which of these is the best option for the two laptops to play, what cable do we need and how or where can I find not too overly complex instructions to set this up? One laptop has Win XP Pro SP1 and the other Win XP Home SP2 installed.

Thankyou..:)

You'll need a 'crossover' ethernet cable. Get it from any computer store.

Than, setup each machine's network card as static IP address...say, one as 192.168.1.1 and the other 192.168.1.2.

Then you'll be all set.

Thankyou, :smileyhappy:

Oh good that does not sound too frighteningly difficult.. gonna get cable in the morning...I thought that accessing the other systems files and sesources is one thing but playing a game where you have the game CD installd in each and choosing the muliplayer option after link was setup was a whole different kettle of fish..? Is it really that simple? what about firewall settings and stuff..?

Ok, I'll get to that hurdle when it comes.. cheers..
