Connecting w/ Internet Explorer

This PC is barely a month old. The high-speed cable modem connection works fine -- I'm able to logon to my work's network with my laptop at home so it's not an internet provider issue. When I try to launch explorer, it opens, then tries unsuccessfully to open a page, it makes it to three green bars in the lower left and the screen stays blank and stops.

I was on tech support last night for 90 minutes. Tried to reinstall internet explorer with no luck. Tried going back in time to when it last worked OK -- no luck. We even restored the PC to its original settings (like the day I first turned it on) -- still no luck.

Dell is mailing me CD's that are to arrive Thurs or Fri and then I need to call them again. This still may or may not work.

Any thoughts on my issues with internet explorer? Thanks.

My work laptop works perfectly fine with the cable modem. Up until Sunday, my PC was also working fine. Since the laptop still works fine and the PC doesn't, I'm operating under the assumption that it's an issue with the PC and not the cable modem since the laptop hasn't had any issues connecting. Is that a false assumption?

Dell tech support said the IP address was fine. I was able to ping in a manner recommended by tech support. I don't believe it successfully pinged any websites though. The tech support person said my results from the ipconfig/all were fine. I can ping again tonight and post the results.

Note that if you are changing the connection to modem between a computer and a router, or between different computers without an intervening router, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem.

I am having same problem with inspiron 6000, beginning last weekend. I am POSITIVE that there is an internet connection as; outlook can send and receive mail , links to internet radio connect, and ping to google.com show a quick and loss free reply. I installed a new browser, firefox, in an attempt to see if Internet Explorer was the cause of the problem. Firefox didn't work any better. I have quadruple checked that both browser know how to connect to internet, and it appears based on loading information that they receive a reply. All this before a system restore, which also did not help. I have turned firewall off, then on with exceptions that allow access for browser (although i have never had to do so in order to browse behind a firewall)

Can someone help us???

I spent another two hours or so chatting with tech support last night. we tried running in safe mode and IE still didn't work. i'm waiting for CD's to arrive today (hopefully) and then i am supposed to contact tech support again to debug. tech support is convinced it's a software issue and not an OS issue. i can't believe a computer that is only a month old is having such a problem. this is ridiculous. i had my previous dell for 8 years and the only problem was to change the memory in year 7. not off to a good start with this pc. very disappointing.

What PC? I hope not Optiplex GX-620
Have you run all Windows updates (there may be three dozen, even more)?
Once you have all Windows updates, how about downloading and running IE version 7 Beta 2 Preview
I am using that here and like it.
Also I am running Bon Echo (version 2 FireFox) on Dell Optiplex systems in Windows XP Professional.

Using Automatic update function, I was able to download the latest updates without use of browers, this did not fix problem.

BBobtwo
Recently I had a student notebook PC which could go to no website (but other things worked fine on the connection) until I discovered hard-coded DNS. As soon as I changed to "find DNS automatically" (to disable the hard-coded) then the notebook worked fine on IE. This was using wired Ethernet when I discovered and solved the problem with theirs.

I also had problems connecting my second PC to the internet . I tried what BBRAXTON suggested ("find DNS automatically" (to disable the hard-coded) ) and now it works fine . Thanks

I went through numerous trouble-shooting fixes with tech support. I reinstalled the OS and other applications from the dvd's they sent in the mail and it still didn't work. They determined I need a new motherboard so this should be arriving at their technician's location today. They'll be coming to my house to fix it. Hopefully this issue will be resolved in the next few days.

was still having problems, checked everything i could imagin and that was suggested, then i created a new profile, internet works fine. Could there be a virus/spywear in other profile that is causing this problem, any one hear of something like this. My Mcafee just expired, I guess I need to locate some new software to look for these things.

The technician came to the house and replaced the motherboard. Still didn't work so he called the support line and did all he could. I had to get back on the line with tech support for another hour. We tried in safe mode (not the first time since this has been going on) and it worked fine. Things are back to "normal".

Shortly after I started using my browser again, the firewall poped up saying that application "zhoplitazo.exe" located in /windows/system32 was attempting to access internet. I wonder if this app, may have caused problem.
Hoops, you may need to check registry for unwanted applications in system folder (mine was hidden, you will have to show hidden files. I'm not sure that was my/our problem, but if i don't know what it is, and I can't even say the name of the application, it doesn't need to be running!
