Connecting Wirless Printer/network router?

Hello,

I have a dell insp. 8600 with a wireless card. I have just purchased a new dell printer and a wireless printer router. What else do I need to set this up? I was told by a dell tech. support that I cannot set up a wireless network without cable or dsl internet access and also told the same thing by a "certified Microsoft representative" know it all jerk at Best Buy. Neither of those is available in my area. I don't care about setting up the wireless internet part, just the wirless printing. Can I just set up a wirless network without high speed internet? If so, what other hardware do I need besides the printer, wireless print adapter and my notebook?

Thanks for you help.

You certainly don't have to have Internet access to set up a network. Suppose your connection to the Internet fails -- your network will continue to work.

I suppose you have a wireless router with a network printer port rather than a wireless router with a separate wireless print server?

Either way, you shouldn't need anything else.

Jerry,

Thanks for replying. I do have the wireless printer router but I do not yet have the wireless network router. I thought that might be what I still needed but I'm not sure which one to buy. I am going to just order one from dell but they have many different ones for broadband, dsl, etc. and since I don't need the internet stuff I'm confused about which one to buy.

Thanks again for your help!

OK. 'Wireless Printer Router' threw me. If that is not a network router, I suppose that it is a 'wirreless print server'?

Yes, then you will need a router. Any wireless router (or a combination of a wired router and an Access Point) should do, so long as the device(s) support the level of encryption you want.

Ok I purchased a netgear 54 mbps Wireless router but when I try to install it on my notebook it searches for a highspeed internet connection which it doesn't find b/c I don't have one and then it refuses to install since it doesn't find one. What should I do?

You do need an ISP to hook up anything wirelessly. The router is looking for an ISP address, and if you do not have internet connection, it won't find one, so you will not be able to hook up your printer on a wireless system.

Sorry I told you wrong information regarding having an ISP to set up a wireless printer. The following website may be able to assist you if you have not already got the printer set up.
