Xinster,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

When this happens, open up a DOS shell and type:

ping www.dell.com

If you receive a reply, then the network is up and the problem lies with  your application.  You should reinstall this to make sure that the program is complete.  If you do not receive a reply, then post back.

i tried the ping method and the message is "Ping request could not find host www.dell.com. Please check the name and try again."

By the way. I lost the original restore disk for my Insprion 2650. could I format the harddrive and reinstall Windows XP professional for this laptop?

Xinster,

Reinstalling the operating system is always an option.  The error you received may mean that the DNS lookup has failed.  Try the following:

ping 143.166.83.231

The above is the IP address for www.dell.com.

You should try to undo any changes to the system prior to this error appearing.

You are right. The DNS lookup has failed. When I pinged the specific ip address I got a reply. How can I correct the problem. I already unistalled the web cam and all it's components which were the cause of this error. I can't think of anything else at this point.

How can I restore the DNS lookup?

Xinster,

You should contact your ISP to resolve the DNS issue.

Problem solved:

This message is for anyone else who might encounter the same problem. What happened was that when I installed the web cam, it replaced the socket setting for the network card. I downloaded a patch called Win socket repair for Xp and restored my original socket properties.

Thanks for everybody's help. I really appreciated.

Would you mind pointing me to the Win sock repair tool that you used?  Thanks!

sorry for the delay response. Haven't been here for a while

Use any search Engine and search for winsockfix. It will direct you to many useful sites for the installer of the program. the installer is less than 1Mb. Therefore it can be downloaded from a healthy computer, saved on a floppy disk and copied onto the computer with connection problems. It is the last option to fix a connection problem before resorting to format the entire hard drive.
