Connection Problem
I just recently found a hotspot on my street, so for future reference I decided to see if I could connect. So I opened up the management screen, configured, and connected. The screen said my computer was connected at 11 mbps and the meter was in the green but I couldn't connect to the internet, so I gave up and went home. When I turned on my computer at home it said I was connected and was still in the green, there is no way I could have been connected at my distance from the source. So what’s going on? Why couldn't I use the internet and why did it say I was still connected? Help

Your network card is probably is the mode where it will connect to every available network. It will scan for available network and the connect to it. That could explain that you had a connection also at home, maybe there is an access point also in that range.
Not being able to connect to the internet is possible. The connection indicated that the network card is connected to the access point. This does not mean you are connected to an internal network. You need to be connected to the internal network to connect to the internet. Most access point also function as a DHCP server which will provide you with an IP adress and a gateway adress. After which you can connect to the internet.
In your case I think the access point is secured. Either a MAC filter has been installed or WEP/WPA has been enabled on the access point. Which means you can connect to the access point, but are not connected to the internal network.
