connection problems

HELP! have a 1100 Insp. note book and wireless 2300 router on an Sony Viao wired machine. Machine has Me and notebook has XP. Have had nothing but trouble getting the wireless to work. Dell support got it going and then it went out. Dell support got it going and now it's out again. After 3 hours on the support line with no luck I need help! Each time on the support line, the help has led me through different ways. Why is this happening and how can I get this solved!

If I run the dsl cable through the router, I'm no longer able to connect to the dsl with my desktop.  we had to talk to dell twice before to get it to work.  now it's out again.  help!!!

Are you able to ping any IP?

can you contact the router, is it installed at the moment?

I don't know what ping means.  I connected the router correctly with the dsl line and computer but I can't get the internet when going through the router.  When I disconnect the router and go back to using the dsl with the computer everything is fine.  Dell said it was because the the Sony had ME and the laptop has XP and the 2300 router works with XP or 2000.  The first two times with Dell they went through steps to config with the ME system, then I put the card in the lap top had more steps to do and it worked.  Why does it just go out?
