Do you have any devices that operate on the 2.4 Ghz frequency that may be interfering with the router (2.4 Ghz cordless phones microwave ovens)?  If so, thry changing the router's channel to one of the extreme channels (1 or 11).  Are you within line of site of the router (i.e. is there anything blocking the signal between your computer and the router?

Hi Steve,

I have changed the channel to 11 on my router. We do have a wireless phone, but we bought it some time ago and this started to happend just a few days ago. The router and my lap top have direct connection.

What do you mean by the following statement ?  "The router and my lap top have direct connection."

Try going to Device Manager, uninstalling the wireless card, rebooting and then reinstalling the drivers for the card.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes..thanks.  I am aware you can change the channel in the router.  However, being new to the Dell wireless adpaters I wasn't sure if the adapter's IBSS channel came into play anywhere in the mix.

btw...I'm using a Linksys wireless router with SRX.  My Linksys adapters work great at 108mps as well as a Netgear my son has at 54mps.  However, I've noticed a slight decrease in speed with my new Dell 1370 adapter which is supposed to run at 54mps.  On occasion, it flip flops in a range of 36mps - 54mps being just two feet from the router.

I was hoping I was on to a possible solution with this particular thread.

Was the value you changed called "IBSS Channel Number" found in the wireless adapter's properties?

If not, where did you change the channel number?

What exactly did you do?

Did you change your router and adapter both to a different channel or did you simply change your adapter's channel to match that of the router?

Hi,

I changed the channel in the router program.

Well, in my case the speed after changing channel stays between 54 and 36 Mbps. This is ok for me.

The problem was dropping from 54 to 1 in seconds causing no respons from internet or in the wireless network.

The only place you can change the channel is in the router setup program.  The wireless network cards will conform to any channel set on the router.  Without knowing which model router you have, it is difficult to tell you where in the router configuration you would go to change the channel.

Read the messages in the Dell Forum on this problem. I had a similar problem and did virtually all that was recommended. Things work much better although speed does flucuate between 36-54 Mbps. I also have an airport express and find it works much, much better as the primary wireless base station than the Linksys devices.

Thanks for the post.  I read the link.  Good information.

I disabled all power saving options for the wireless adpater under properties.

Oddly enough I then changed my router to channel 2 and am getting a consistent 54mps rate.

specs:

XP Home, I6000 1.6 Celeron M, 512mb ram, 60 GB HDD, Dell 1370 wireless MiniPci, Linksys wireless with SRX
