Considerations for wirelessly networking a Windows 98se machine? Steps involved?

I'm finishing cleaning up and upgrading a Windows 98se machine for my kids to use and thought it would be a good education for me to set it up on a home wireless network.  I currently have a Dell Dimension 4300s running XP home that is wired to my Westell modem/router combo.  The Westell is obviously wireless-capable.  It can be found here:

We are getting Verizon/Yahoo! DSL and are pleased with it and I had no hiccups installing the system.

The "refurbished" machine is running Windows 98se and has a D-Link DWL510 wireless adapter installed.  I guess my question is - where do I go from here?  I have done quite a few queries on the topic and printed out a bunch of material, but was wondering if anybody knows the general steps I need to go through to pull this off.  It is a bit confusing with all the addresses and protocols and security info etc.  I guess I need to just wade through all my documentation.

TIA
Dave

Hi Dave,

1) Most Wireless USB adapters need USB 2.0 to work

2) As you said you have D-Link Wireless Adapter, use the configuration utility that is installed along with the driver of this adapter to configure it to the Verizon wireless box.

One other recommendation here. I would rather suggest you have the refurbished system wired to the router and use the wireless adapter on the XP (4300s) system as it should get automatically configured to the wireless router (No seperate utility required for configuration). Apart from this 4300s supports USB 2.0

Yo Best try - thanks for that feedback.  Good point about having the refurb hardwired to the router and the XP machine set up with the adapter.  Actually its not a USB adapter, but a PCI slot adapter.  my XP machine is for me - the refurb for the kids.  My machine is right by the DSL line entry into the house (where I like it) and the kids' is in the next room over.

Problem: I successfully installed and configured the adapter in the Win98 machine.  Its happily getting a signal, but when I click on IE I get no connection to the web - just a DNS error.

Hi Dave,

Now the situation is Wired works but wireless doesnt (DNS Error). Follow these steps. On Wired - Start -- Run -- cmd -- ipconfig /all and hit Enter.. Make a note of the DNS server numbers.

On the windows 98, Click on start -- control panel -- Network -- Highlight TCP/IP for Dlink Wireless Adapter and Click on properties -- Click on DNS tab -- Enable DNS -- give the host name as your computer name and leave the domain name blank. Add the DNS server numbers from the note. Click OK and OK. Restart the computer.

To find computer name, Click Start -- Control Panel -- Network -- Click on Identification tab.

Hi Best-try,
I went through the process you mentioned - which was pretty cool - but when I went to my Win 98 machine I've only got 3 choices under Network:
1) Client for Microsoft Networks
2) DLink wireless adapter
3) TCP/IP

I do not have TCP/IP for DLink Wireless Adapter...could this be a problem?
I put in the DNS data under the TCP/IP properties, but still fail to connect.

Thanks for your help on this - I do appreciate it.
Dave

Best-try - I got the answer from dslreports dot com.  Check it out: I go to the "Network Setup" wizard on my XP box, go through the brief setup process, and select "Save to disk" at the end (I saved it to a floppy disk).  Then I walk over to the 98 machine and pop in the floppy, double-click the file, and follow the instructions.  On reboot - BAM!!! I got the web :smileyvery-happy: !!

Thanks for your input on this :smileyhappy: .
