Which model computer?  Which version of Windows?  What kind of internet connection are you trying to share?  How is the network set up?  A few more details and someone may be able to help.

Sorry. let me add the information now:

Which model computer?   Dimension 4300

Which version of Windows?  Windows XP Home

What kind of internet connection are you trying to share?  Dial-up

How is the network set up? XP's Networking Wizard

A few more details and someone may be able to help.

Recently my computer received a virus. with the help of Dell, My Virus Program, and reinstalling(repairing) windows it is up and running again. I have resently got my network back up (had to replace a network card on one of my client computers and a new hub). But now I am getting the 1061 error when I try to activate the internet sharing option.

Is there I file I am missing? a bad connection? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I am sorry that windows xp already contains Windows Installer packaage 2.0. and you wouldnot beableto reinstall the same. please accept my apologies. however, please try these steps and let me know if they work

Log on to your computer as an administrator.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, typemsiexec.exe /unregister, and then press ENTER.

Type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.

Verify that the SYSTEM account has full control access permissions to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive in the Windows registry. In some cases, you may also have to add Administrator accounts. To do so:WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

Click the following registry hive:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
If SYSTEM is not listed in the Group or user names list, click Add, make sure that the local computer name appears in the From this location box, type system in the Enter the object names to select box, click Check Names, and then click OK.

Click SYSTEM in the Group or user names list, and then select the Full Control check box under Allow in the Permissions for SYSTEM box.

Click Apply, click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

Restart the computer. If the problem is not resolved, repair Windows XP

HI,

sorry I didn't get back sooner. I was researching the installer package you talked about last time after work last night. I found the windows installer sp1a. I downloaded It. I took most of the day. It did the job. I can now now share my internet (no error messages). But now I keep getting the messages on just my host comptuer that I don't have permission to access my network (MSHOME). And I can't access this computer from other computers. But no problems sharing between the other three comptuers their files.

Is there something I can do? Would these steps you mention help? since they are on permission?

Thanks so much for the wonderful help so far!!

Wendy

Ok, I tried the steps that were mentioned. (error back again!  ).  And it didn't do anything. The registry hive says that the administrator (only account on my computer) and the system have the needed access. Any other ideas? I think I am getting somewhere because sometimes I can get the internet connection sharing to work but the network doesn't work or vise versa.

but I have a second question. on one of the client computers I notice I don't have anything under network connections. I can share files and see network computers when I click the network link. but when I click to view connections I get a blank screen to the right. Is there something I need to do? I just reinstalled windows on this computer and also used the windows repair. No difference.

Thank you!!!

Wendy
