Copying a program (and files) from one computer to another (they are networked together)
I just bought a Dimension 8400 computer and I need to copy an entire program along with the program's files from an older computer to the new one. The computers are linked together in a network.
I thought I could just copy and paste the program from the old one to the new one but when I did that all the program files showed up individually and covered my entire desktop. I need to know how to transfer the program and all the existing files onto the computer with just one icon showing up on my desktop.

You cannot copy programs from one computer to another and expect the programs to work. In Windows, programs must be installed. Installation puts all of the necessary entries into the Windows registry, and a program cannot run unless these entries are made. Data files can be copied, but programs cannot.

Create a new folder on your hard drive and open the folder. Open My Network Places and browse to the folder on the computer to which the network is connected, find the files you want to copy, select them, then drag them to the new folder and drop them there.
If you want an icon on your desktop, find the executable file you want run, right click and hold down the right mouse button and hold down the Cntrl key, drag the file to the desktop, and when you release the mouse button and the Cntrl key, choose "Create Shortcut Here".
