D-Link wireless keeps kicking out
My home D-link wireless router kept kicking out, so I bought a new D-link...problem did not go away. I had cable then and now I've just moved and now have sattelite and it's the same thing... a couple of times a day it kicks out and all I have to do is unplug the D-Link wireless router and it comes back. I now think there is something in my main desktop computer that is hard wired to the D-Link that is causing this. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Thank you so much if you do take the time to respond.

Do you have any 2.4 Ghz cordless phones in the vicinity? If so, try changing the channel the router uses to one of the extreme channels (1 or 11) and see if the problem goes away.
If you suspect that something on the "main desktop computer" that is causing the problem, find a time when you can test this hypothesis by turning off the desktop long enough to see if the problem persists when the desktop is not on the the network.

The next step would be to see if it some software running from startup on the desktop that is causing the problem. Try starting the desktop is Safe Mode with Network Support. This will load a diagnostic mode of Windows and will not not run the programs that normally run from startup, but should be on the network. Again, run it long enough to see if the problem occurs on the wireless network. If the problem goes away, then we know where to look next.
If it doesn't go away when the desktop is running in Safe Mode, it will be more difficult to troubleshoot, but we'll keep trying.

Okay...I ran it in safe mode for a over a day and the D-Link wireless modem never kicked out. It appears there is something in my main desktop which is hard wired to the modem that is kicking it out. What's next?
Thanks for you time on this,
Mike

Try to eliiminate unnecessary programs from running at startup in normal mode on the desktop. Go to Start > Run and type msconfig then hit the Enter key. Click on the startup tab and start unchecking items, until by trial and error you find the culprit.

It is still dropping the connection. I was wrong...even when my main computer is down it drops it. We have just moved and had no phone service for a week and still kicked out. I contacted D-link and they suggested I assign a static IP address to all my computers...but when I did they didn't work. I put them back in auto and they worked, but it still kicks out from time to time. Should I trash the D-link router and try a different brand?

Since it does not appear to be related to the desktop and since the problem goes away when connected in Safe Mode, it still appears that something running from startup on the problem computer is causing the problem. Did you explore eliminating startup items using msconfig and unchecking items on the startup tab?

There are other locations that run programs at startup. The following document lists all possible locations and involves looking into (and editing) the Windows registry, which can be dangerous.

At least look in all locations that could be running something from startup. But, if you feel uncomfortable backing up or editing the registry, you might want to go to the HijackThis forum, read the message in red at the top of the forum, then post a HijackThis log in that forum for an expert to look at:
