D530 wireless card problems

Hi   

D530  has the Intel(r) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

I have been struggling with this machine since Monday.    I discovered that the AVG would not remote install … I then was unable to update windows defender or use windows update.   If we share a folder ,,, another machine is unable to logon to the shared folder.

If you ping the wireless card then it times out unless , the laptop is either using the internet or is pinging another machine.   It would appear that if the wireless  card is not being used then it closes down.  … 

 

The Ethernet card is working fine,  but the wireless card is giving us problems …Intel pro wireless 3945abg   .   we have used the Intel software to manage it and also just windows to manage it.        

 

I have formatted the machine and installed windows xp afresh but still the wireless card has issues..

 

I am in Kenya and the machine was purchase in UK ...  

Is there any troubleshooting I can do on the card ...
