D9200 Networking problems

Hey guys,

Not too sure where to start here but...

I had a D4600 (with XP), it was set up with both a Creative Broadband router and a belkin wireless router. I.E. the phone line went into the creative, which had an ethernet cable going to the belkin, which had another ethernet cable going into the back of the computer.

This was fine, the laptop had a connection and all was well.

A few weeks ago I got a new D9200 (with Vista) and tried to keep the same networking setup, but when it was the same, I couldnt gain access to either router through the ip address (192.168.1.1 / 192.168.2.1). But when I removed the wireless router from the network the internet worked perfectly on the 9200.

Now after a long conversation with various relatives when I have both routers in the network, the laptop has internet access but the D9200 doesn't and cannot access the routers through IP address.

Its driving me mad at this point, so just wondering why a network that worked on XP isnt working with Vista. I could be missing out on something really obvious but can't see anything like that.

Thanks for any help at all,
Martin.

One idea. How do you have the subnet mask set? It looks like you need something like 255.255.0.0 rather than 255.255.255.0.

Hey Peter thanks for the reply.

It depends what you mean by how is the subnet mask set.

In the belkin it is set as 255.255.255.0 and wont allow a change to 255.255.0.0.
The creative can be set to 255.255.0.0 but doesnt seem to change anything.

And in the TCP/IP settings it gets the IP, subnet mask and DNS address automatically.

Thanks,
Martin

I might be wrong, but I don't think your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0. That means that your local network is defined by only the last 8 bits. But you have one router a 1.1 and one at 2.1 so your local network uses at least 10 bits.

I have a setup with two routers. I can not access both of them with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

The correct subnet for both of those private addresses would be 255.255.225.0

Please explain again how this is setup.  Why is there a need for two routers?  If it is necessary, you will need a bridge to join the two.

We got the wireless router when the new laptop arrived so it would have internet access. The wireless one doesn't have a phone line socket so it can't be used without the creative aswell.

The way its set up is the phone line goes from the wall into the creative. An ethernet cable then goes from the creative into the Belkin in the "connection to modem" socket. Another ethernet cable goes from the Belkin into the ethernet socket in the computer itself.

Hope this helps.
