deleted important file? help!

Through Aol Instant Messenger I was pretty sure I had gotten a trojan on my computer (I have this message in AIM profile that won't go away and only appeared after I clicked on a link from an "infected" friend of mine, now neither of us can get rid of the trojan)

1)  So I used Nortan Antivirus to scan my computer and it did find one infected file which it said may be beyond repair so I deleted the file, it was "C:\Windows\AV.EXE"... do I need to re-create this file somehow?

2) I still have the trojan, I think, because the message is still in my AIM profile.... anyone know how to get rid of it? or where I should post for this?

(sorry, I have windows 98)

I will visit the website you included and hopefuly it will help.  I did go to the windows updates for internet explorer and updated everything before I ran the virus scan.  So I'm not sure if that whole is patched even though I still seem to have the trojan?  How is it that I deleted the file and did the windows updates but still have the trojan apearing in my AIM? (I even re-scannedm computer earlier and it found nothing harmful).  I don't know what else to do.

av.exe is the trojan you are talking about.

I've seen this page as being helpfiul: http://www.siena.edu/antivirus/viruses/realphx.htm

Note that you have an unpatched hole in IE that is allowing it to spread. Visit windows update and download the critical updates.

okay, this may be an obvious thing, but did you actually edit your AIM profile to remove the link?

yes I had edited my profile repeatedly, trying to get rid of it, and it just kept coming back... I have finally gotten rid of it after following the instructions in the link you provided - thanx.
