I had this problem with my Dell Laser Printer 1720 and after trying everything I could find online, I was almost ready to order a new printer; then I found this seemingly unrelated problem and method to run diagnostics on the printer and reset some things, and presto my printer reset and works just fine again. BTW - I bought this printer in 2008 and am still running on the original ink drum!! I don't use it tons but enough. Prior to all my lights flashing, I had two paper jams in the main front tray that I easily pulled out, which was strange because I can't remember this happening, but maybe it was related...? Anyway try these diagnostic steps: https://www.dell.com/community/Printers/1720dn-operator-panel-light-load-paper-flashing-remove-output/td-p/4220897
