What is the NAME of your 'Workgroup' ?

Is it printer drivers (for XP) that you need? If so, what is the brand and model of printer?
A student who gets tech support from me decided that getting a printer to work under XP was enough trouble that the student wound up buying a new printer (of a different brand) rather than working to solve a difficult problem, since the student was/is not technical.

So is this the situation: you have the new computer and connected to it the new printer. The new computer and the Windows 98 computer are on the network together.
To try to use the printer from Windows 98 system, you would need to set up printer Sharing on the new computer and give it a name (anything, 'MyPrint')
On the network, can the Windows 98 system 'see' the other computer? If printer sharing is set up, can it 'see' the printer share as a sub-folder of the new computer on the network?

No it works on a xp computer. We bought a dell with the printer. But we also have an old dell from years ago that runs on win 98. On that pc I want the printer to work.

It has been decades (figuratively) since Windows 98, particularly since M$ is essentially pulling the plug on even Windows 2000 Pro so it is quite likely that any modern printer may be oblivious to Windows 98. What brand and model of printer is it? The manufacturer should be the one to let you know whether they have a driver supporting Windows 98, in my opinion.

but the manufacturer is dell. It's a dell a920 printer.

You may be unaware. The people who 'help' on these forums are not connected with Dell (the company).

Has a lot of information. When you have read it all, see if any of it gives you what you need for Windows 98 (whom to contact). I found this with Google. Otherwise, this may be where I get off because I do not see myself being of any further help on this printer issue.

Searching the Dell download site, I could find no Windows 98 compatilbe drivers for the A920 printer.  It is highly unlikely that they exist.  Without the Windows 98 drivers, you will not be able to use that printer from the Windows 98 computer.   Windows 2000 drivers are available, so you might consider updating the Windows 98 computer to Windows 2000, or if it has enough memory and a high enough processor speed, upgrading to Windows XP.

You could 'print' to a PDF and then direct that file to the computer which does have actual printing capability.
