Dell Latutude D600 help : Broadcom ethernet problem

This problem is this. whenever i try to use my D600 with the ethernet cable, it will notice it is connected but will never transfer data. If i plug in a cable before start -up it will work for about 5mins before it decide to disconnect it self. I have connected it to multiple cables that goes straight to a modem and also others that goes though routers which gave me the conclusion thats it is on the computer, and i dont have a static ip setup either. I have tried reinstalling the drivers to the card but any attempt i tried to remove them fails and cause my computer to freeze which required a hard boot. Wireless works just fine so its only affecting the ethernet. can anyone shine some light on this?

It's hard to say what the problem is.

Try running the broadcom diagnostics.  If you don't have them installed, you can grab them from here:  http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R62710.EXE    Make sure to run them against your wired adapter and not the wireless (it will let you choose any network adapter installed).

You can also try updating to the latest broadcom drivers manually.  Assuming you have the gigabit card, I *believe* that the drivers can be found here:  http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtreme_desktop.php    Note that broadcom has recently reordered its driver page, so it's also possible that your drivers could be here:  http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netlink.php  It's also possible that the files at these links are exactly the same.

If for some reason you don't have a gigabit adapter, then your drivers are here:  http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/4401.php

Download the zip file for your OS.  Extract the contents to a new folder.  Use the 'update driver' button in device manager for your network card to update the drivers.  Point to the new folder.

That's about all I know to suggest

if your wireless works...install the drivers that way...

I mean, it sounds like a software problem if you can't remove or update the drivers.  you might try posting in the XP forums -- http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=sw_winxp
