Dell Network Assistant Problem?

Running Windows Media Center 05 on XPS M1210 notebook.  I've been running my wireless network at home flawlessly since purchase.  I have backed-up to an external hd connected to another computer daily without difficulty.  Clicking on My Network Places would bring up all the shared folders on the network.  Difficulty began with Dell Nework Assistant 90 d free trial ended today.  Suddenly, I could not longer access networked computers.  I tried rebooting as well as set a new restore point prior to this problem without change.  Double clicking on My Network places only brings up MSN butterfly.  Clicking on "view network computers" leads to an error message "Mshome is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  The list of this workgroup is not currently available".  After purchasing a key for the Dell Network Assistant, I can access all available computers and shared drives via this software, but still cannot access these drives when double clicking My Network Places.  Get same error message as above.  Sorry for long note.  Ideas appreciated.

Hi,

I don't have any answers for you I'm sorry. In fact, I'm having exactly the same problem myself.

I was wondering whether you'd managed to resolve this issue and if so, whether you'd be able to let me know how you did it.

Thanks

Unfortunately, I have not.  I will link you to another forum on microsoft where other people are having similar problems.  None of their fixes worked for me.  They are miffed that I still cannot view the Network Neighborhood even after uninstalling MS OneLive Care.  I have tried turning off sharing and then setting it back on for specific folders to no avail.  I'll send you the link in another reply when I get home this evening.

Sorry to hear your having the same trouble...

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I've managed to sort my issue. I turned off the firewalls (both Norton and Windows) and it works fine now.

I'm a bit worried about the effect of having no firewall, but it is an encrypted network so I guess there's no threat.

I hope that you manage to sort your problem out soon.

Thanks again for replying.

First you should only have 1 Firewall turned on at any time. So if you have Norton turn that one on and leave the Windows Firewall off. If after turning on the Norton Firewall you again have problems you will need to configure Norton to recognize your network. This can be done by adding the IPAddress for your network to the Firewall settings and telling Norton Firewall that this is a trusted network. Here is a link on how to configure the firewall.

Second, since you've chosen to not use the Dell Network Assistant you can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs.

Hi Gina,

Thanks for your reply.

I will have a go at configuring the Norton Firewall setting using the link you sent.

I was and am currently using Dell Network Assistant and had a problem even using that until I turned off the firewall. Rather than removing the program, I would actually like to purchase the full version as it seems to be a pretty good and straight-forward programme.

Thanks again for your advice.
