Dell "Start-up Clean Up" caused browser problems

I accepted Dell Supports offer to cleanup my Startup files. Now every site I try to access times out. The browser (IE) does say "website found; waiting for reply" before timing out.

My AOL interface (which my wife insists on using) continues to work fine. My Apple laptop using the same router is fine.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 running XP.

Any help/sugggestions would be appreciated.

wow... I think we are having the same problem. Everything was fine on my Dell Dimension 5150 when I went to bed Monday night. Yesterday morning I could not access certain websites. By accident, I found that I CAN access secure websites that start with https:// like my bank website. Have you tried accessing a site like that? Anyway, I cannot access anything that starts with http:// on either Firefox or IE. https:// sites load just fine and both my email and IM are working properly. I have that computer, my husbands desktop, and my laptop all connected to the internet through the same router and cable modem. My desktop is the only one with the problem. I am anxiously awaiting an answer! Sorry I'm not more help. Rhonda

Are you running McAfee? I am on my way to figuring it out! I have managed to temporarily fix it. I went into task manager (ctrl/alt/delete) and highlighted the process named McProxy.exe and then clicked "End Process" and then clicked on yes. This then allows me to go to http:// websites. That is, until McProxy.exe automatically reloads itself in a few minutes! Then I have to repeat the process of ending it again. I have to figure out how to get it to stop re-starting itself every few minutes. I believe that McAfee must have updated itself in the middle of the night Monday night and this is why I am having this problem now. On the McAfee Support site, there is an announcement that says, "some McAfee customers have reported a loss of browser internet connectivity. You can immediately resolve this issue by performing the steps outlined below." Basically, it tells you uninstall and reinstall McAfee. Doesn't make me very happy. Here is the address to that page: http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/. Rhonda

As you noticed, I can bring up "https" sites. It is frustrating that Dell performs these updates, but provides no free support to fix the problems they create.
