ok first of all, how did you try to stop some un-needed add-ons? Try this... make sure that anything that has to do with your internet is turning on when your computer turns on. Go to Start->run type in "msconfig"    go to the last tab which says Start-up. make sure if there is anything that has to do with your internet is checked.

Also, do you have a secure wireless connection? because if you do, then you will need to first connect to the router via an ethernet cord first so it can establish the connection. try these... if is still doesent work, just let us know, thanks!

Ok, when I first did whatever I did, I did the msconfig. I had a notification from Southwest Airlines that I didn't want to open when I turned on my laptop along with a Kodak program. tI figured I would turn them off  and then when I wanted to use them I could just open them. Thats when my problem started. Like I said I tried to do a system restore and every thing  prior to that point was gone.
 When they installed the wireless on the boat I work on, It came right up without hooking them together. I used to pickup wireless in airports or just anywere I was around some. In the internet connections, I can right click and then click repair. It tells me that "windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed
       connecting to the wireless network

two things... before you did a system restore, did you have to change settings on your computer to connect wirelessly the first time? because if you did, and you did a system restore, then those settings probably changed.

Second thing, and i highly doubt this is the problem: did you put any software onto your computer when you set up your wireless? the reason i say i highly doubt this is the reason is because you usually do not need software to go wireless. I mean, the router you may have, for example, Linskys, may give you software, but it is not needed to connect wirelessly (unless you have a secure connection, which you dont) But i am not 100 percent certain if this is true for all different brands of routers.

I left off this morning that I went to msconfig and all was on. After things didn't work when I tried to turn off Southwest and Kodak Is when I tried to do the restore, I have used the system restore on other ocasions when it didn't work right after doing something.there are usually several restore points a month. There were none before the point that was created then when I was finnished. I dont think it said any thing about saving changes. when it does I usually don't.I've messed up doing that before but was always able to restore it. I've had the laptop for two and a half years and its always picked up wireless networks.when they put in the wireless at work I didn't need to hook up to anything or run a disc.

ok, lets try this basic step first. Make sure your wireless switch is turned on, on your laptop. There should be a button someone on the external part of the laptop. When it is on, it should be lit up. If it is lit up, then it may be a Winsock or TCP/IP problem. (Im looking for the easier way to test a TCP/IP problem, so ill tell you know how to check for a Winsock problem.)

Go to start->Run
Type in cmd
When Command prompt opens...
type in     ftp localhost (& press enter),
if the response is "connect unknown error number - your windows socket is OK;
Post your ftp result if it is different.
enter quit (press enter) at the ftp > prompt to exit ftp.   (if you dont type quit and you just "x" out of command prompt, it will freeze and it will bring up END PROGRAM and do a force quit. So type quit and then you can "x" out of command promt. Like i said, i am still trying to find the easiest way to test for TCP/IP. BUt let me know how the Winsock test comes out!

Ok,First off I couldnt find an external switch. The only buttons I have are the on button and the internet button, whitch goes to the help and support center. The wireless card is built in.
 I did the run cmd, typed in ftp localhost,and got the " connect unknown error number".

thinking about it and what you have told me, it does not sound like your laptop, but your router/modem. i mean, you can get wirless at airports and on boats, but not at your house. fmake sure that the ethernet cord goes from you modem to your router. and on your router, if you have a linksys, make sure the big yellow light on the LEFT is lit up. It has all the lines and says CISCO under it. It is also a button. If you dont see anything on the LEFT lit up, PRESS it and it will light up. when it is lit up it means that your router is sending a signal.

Let me know.

Hey Dan,
 I am on the boat now. The other guys with laptops are not having any problems with the wireless. Everywere I've tried the wireless, I click on "view available wireless networks " and instead of getting a list of networks I get " windows cannot configure this wireless connection "

 If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection use tha software
