Adrian,

Same problem.  The Tools -> Advanced -> Reset... -> Check box for Delete Personal Settings method works.  You will be prompted to restart Internet Explorer.  HOWEVER, before doing that, go back to Tools and change your homepage to Use Blank.  Close and re-open Internet Explorer.  Now you will be able to set your homepage to www.msn.com and it will stick.

Welcome to the forums Alan :emotion-21:

I would hope Adrian has managed to fix the problem, in the five weeks or so it's been since his last post :emotion-55:

I would've hoped the same, but I have not.  Dell has assured me they have a crack team on the problem and will call me back as soon as they find a solution - but, amazingly, this solution worked!

I know I've tried something very similar to this before, but presumably in not quite the right order.

I am immensely grateful to Alan, and very glad he didn't make the assumption that I'd found a solution already.  I'm sure his posting will help a lot of people in the same situation.

This solution didn't work for me and now IE8 runs really slowly.  And still I go to dell.msn.com when I'm trying to go to msn.com.  I've deleted all my cookies, set my home page to blank, reset the browser and still Dell is hijacking my computer.  I didn't pay Dell $1300 just so I could see their advertising.

I'm on Win7 (64) and using IE8.

For Windows 7

Got to Tools> Manage Add-on's> Disable ALL Windows Live Add-Ons.

Dell Technical support helped find this. :emotion-5:

Good luck,

Thanks.  I did try that a while ago.  Didn't work.  I've also reset IE, relabeled the hosts file, put dell.msn.com in my blocked sites and enabled content advisor, deleted all cookies, prefetch, and temp files.

The only thing that's worked so far is to disable the protected mode.  THAT will let me go to msn.com, but should I be running IE that way?  What is it protecting me from anyway?

Mandy,

Not to much of a chip head, but based on what I saw yesterday with the Dell tech, it was definitly a Microsoft Add-On issue, not a Hijack issue like everyone has stated on other Bolgs.  I will say that the cookie file needs to get removed from the Internet Temp Directory, just eleteing cookies and history will not work.

As far as running IE with no protection...NO WAY!

I deleted all the files in the temp and %temp% directories (and something called prefetch), as directed by microsoft tech support.  They're the ones who had me try the unprotected mode.

As for calling it a hijack, I use it more in the traditional sense of the word.  Dell sold me a computer with a hijacked IE.  It might not meet the malware definition of hijack, but it sure meets the aviation one!  I guess I won't be going to msn.com anytime soon (or dell.msn.com either).

Thanks,

Mandy

Ah, Microsoft tech suppot found one solution:  run IE as an administrator and you can go to msn.com.

on IE got to the favorites bar and then go to Get more add-ons. Remove dell.msn.com from your home page selections and then download from the Optimized Browser the new MSN. This worked for me. Good luck!
