device manager does not detect 1390 dell wireless card

I've seen a similar problem among other posts-- My computer doesn't detect that I have a wireless card, and doesn't show the icons in the taskbar that relate to the wireless connection.  I recently had to reinstall my OS (though this problem precipitated the OS reinstall), and I also downloaded the driver for the wireless card on this site.  Still nothing.  I have also tried to hold down FN + F2 but that seems to do nothing to my laptop.  Any suggestions?

Is the wireless enabled in BIOS?

I would definitely start with the BIOS, both to see if it is enabled there and if the BIOS sees it at all.  The next step would be to reseat the card, especially if the BIOS does not see it.

Hi Larry,

Thanks a lot for the response.  I have no idea what BIOS is.  Can you help me determine how I know if it is enabled? And I definitely don't know how to reseat the card, either.

Thanks.

Hi,

Can you tell me how I might do that? I already reinstalled the driver for the card using the download from the support site. Is that what you suggested I do?

You can get into the BIOS by pressing F2 at the Dell splash screen just after powering on the computer.  There will be a section to check the wireless card settings and whether the motherboard sees the wireless card.

To update the BIOS, download the file from the support site (the same place you got the updated driver), then run it.  Make sure the system is powered on and on AC power when you update the BIOS.  Also do not power off the computer until the update is complete and the computer has restarted back into Windows.  Interrupting a BIOS update could make the system completely non-functional (referred to as bricking, because its pretty much a brick or doorstop at that point).

At this point, I would recommend you see if the BIOS sees the wireless card, and go from there.

Still nothing.  I checked BIOS and from what I could tell (though I'm not 100% sure I did it correctly), it detected a wireless card.  I also updated it by downloading it from the dell site and the system doesn't detect the dell wireless card.  It does recognize also have broadcom and a 1394 net adapter... can those help me with wireless networking?

In Device Manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware tab) does it list anything with a ?, ! or red X?

I don't see where anyone asked what system you have. You say this happened before you reinstalled the OS, so did it ever work?

I feel there has to be something wrong with the card. I would also recommend you remove and reinstall the card to see if that makes any difference.

the fact that you have no listing in device manage not even a unknown device makes me belive the OS and system hardware are not communicating with the card.

Nope.

Yeah, I would have to agree with Dave on this.

I have the same symptoms on a Vostro 1000 with the oddity of being able to see the card in devmgmt when in SAFE mode ONLY !

I have reseated the card.

I don't have options in the BIOS for viewing the 1390 details (Phoenix 2.6.2)

When I removed it from SAFE MODE it did NOT pick it up in Normal mode.

When I boot to "safe mode with networking" the screen is not usable - large lines down it (I possibly inadvertently installed the wrong version of software e.g. Japanese instead of international r157038).

When I boot to safe mode after removing it from devmgmt it finds it again and reinstalls it.

Any help would be much appreciated as I think the device is working correctly,

This issue was possibly caused by usage of Nokia software on the laptop to communicate with the (disappointing) e51. Tho' rstrui didn't solve anything.

_____ UPDATE [25/Feb/09] _____

Bizarre-ness ! Ran the recent Vista SP install. When I booted this morning there was a "Broadcom 802.11" device in devMgmt with yellow exclamation.

Downloaded latest driver from Dell and applied.

After applying it device looks correct in devMgmt.

When I press Fn-F2 it does NOT turn on the WiFi light (beside numLock, capsLock lights) on system BUT it DOES briefly show an icon/symbol on the desktop indicating that WiFi is On / Off.

Still no networks available so I reboot.

Upon reboot device is MISSING from devMgmt again.

HMMMMMM ?

_____ UPDATE END _____
