DHCP problem - Inspiron 6400

Hello,

I'm having a problem with DHCP on ethernet on my brand new Insprion 6400 running Windows XP SP2.

Problem: I cannot get an IP address from the DHCP server of my campus dorm when connecting through ethernet. There is an EAP/TLS authentification with the Odyssey Client from Funk Software. When I try to connect authentification works perfectly but then I have Limited Connectivity. When I try to release and renew through ipconfig it gives me the following error message : "Cannot locate DHCP server". It seems that no packets are received on Local Area Connection dialog. However, I have packets coming in and out on the Odyssey Client program. If I connect to the same network with a fixed IP it works fine(but isn't a solution for me).

Interestingly, when I connect to other networks outside DHCP works fine. When I connect to my library network which requires the same Odyssey client, it works perfectly as well.

I have tried reinstalling the network adapter, uninstalling my firewall, disabling the windows firewall and renewing through ipconfig.  The networks administrator suggest I need to reformat and reinstalling windows which in my view doesn't  make sense and wanted to get a second opinion.

Please Help....

Thanks.

Sorry I missed that.  The first thing to do is go to Start > Run and type services.msc then hit Enter.  Find the DHCP client service and make sure that it is started and is set to start automatically.   Then check the Dependency services and make sure they are all running as well.

You are using an internet connection protocol that few of us have any experience with.  I suggest you contact your campus networking people to get help with this.  Sorry.

Thanks for inyou reply.
I am aware of that  but they want to reformat my computer and I was hoping that somebody had suggestions on what could lead to such a problem (see above) i.e. DHCP not working, in general?

Thanks.

I've checked that the DHCP service is running and that all the dependencies as well.
I'm pretty sure something is blocking the response from the DHCP server.

Thanks:

Have you tried disabling all firewalls that might be running on your 6400?

Yes. Have uninstalled the Mc Afee software and disabled the windows firewall.

Again, I'm back to the original statement. Since you can connect elsewhere and since you can at least get to the authentication page, it seems that are getting an IP address at least initiailly.  The problem seems to occur going beyond the authentication page, is that correct?  If so, it does not seem to be a problem with your computer.  Does the connection that you are having trouble with use different software than at the other locations where you can connect?  If so, then it could be a problem with just that software, or, as I suggested before, a problem with the complex system they have implemented in order for you to connect from this locality.  Sorry I could not be of more help.

if you put your windows disc in while you are in windows it should bring up an upgrade option do that some times i know in my case the factory dell installation was messed up example: i have a core 2 duo processor and when i pushed control+shift+esc it would bring up task manager when i pushed the tab for performance it only showed 1 processor in the graph after i upgraded windows using the method listed above i some how fixed it and now the graph shows 2 processors it is weird i know but that way you won't loose all of your data or anything like that.
it may be a simple fix like that another option that you could try is go to my network places and on the left hand of the screen you should see a Network Tasks menu and on it.  It will have a "link" for Show icons for networked UPnP devices or it may have Hide icons for networked UPnP devices try clicking either one of these on my network i had to click the Hide icons to connect to my network and access the web and if that doesn't work go to your local computer store and explain your situation to them and may be they can give you more advice.  I hate to say it but most people in college IT departments are kind of dee dee dee's at least in my area the employees in the local computer store that i go to have their MSCE degrees and they are a bit more educated in that field
