That's fairly common.  Not really a problem.

If your 3000 doesn't do it, that is the exception rather than what usually happens.

With a thunderstorm and lightning you should not even be on line as there is the potential for lightning hitting the modem and the PC.  And if you get a lightning strike in most cases the motherboard and power supply are "toast".

With the modem on line and someone taking a phone off hook, the dial tone can be introduced into the line and that can cause the modem to try and "retrain" (resync) and can cause it to hang up or go off line.  It can also introduce errors in the data and that can also cause the modem to try and resync and drop off the line.  I've been working with modems since 1973, and dial up's since the mid 70's - although they have improved they still basically work like they did in the 70's and that is almost anything can cause an interruption and cause an outage.

Hi Mike...

Fireberd is right on!

I learned the hard way to ALWAYS disconnect the phone line from the modem if a storm is predicted...

My Dimension 4400 took a surge through the phone line and into the modem and it was toast. I lost everything!

Just an FYI... most experts say you should not talk on the phone during a lightning storm either.
