Dial-up problem

Sometimes when I try to connect, I get a message saying 'the remote computer did not respond.' I thought it was an ISP problem, but can connect on an older notebook. I did troubleshooting, and this is what it told me:

The troubleshooter detected that a COM port may be disabled. This may be the cause of the problem. Follow the steps below.

To enable a COM port

  1. Open Device Manager in Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT) to expand the list of ports.
  3. Right-click the port the modem is using, and then click Enable.

If Enable is not listed, the COM port is enabled.

****  But when I go into device manager, I don't see 'ports'.  Can anyone help?

The wording of your post suggests that you do connect at least some of the time.  If it can connect at all, you don't have a disabled port.  If the modem goes through the connection cycle and the remote computer doesn't respond, your software may not be properly configured for your ISP.  For this problem you need to contact the ISP for help.  It could be something as simple as having the connection configured for type of compression that the ISP does not support.

As for your question, the device manager only lists ports if you have them.  You don't mention the computer you have, but my 5160 has no parallel or serial ports, and therefore doesn't show them in device manager.  You should have an entry for modems, however, and the properties box should have a diagnostic that shows if the modem is responding properly to commands.  The trouble shooter is probably a generic program that must take into account computers that still use a serial port to communicate with an external modem.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the reply. I am able to connect some of the time, which in a way makes it more frustrating. I was hoping it was independent from my ISP because they are difficult to deal with. Oh well, I will have to call them.  Thanks again!
