Dialup disconnect on XP when network card enabled

my AOL dialup (internal V.92 modem) randomly disconnects whenever the ethernet network card is enabled. whenever i disable the network card the dialup works perfectly, hours on end without disconnect. this is happening on two XP SP2 machines. one is an upgrade from 98 and the other is an original Dell XP machine reinstall after hard drive crash.  i have tried different dial in phone numbers with same problem.  i am quite sure that this problem was not happening on the XP machine before the hard drive crashed.  has anyone heard of this problem. any ideas on how to correct this?

Within IE, go to Tools, Internet Options and then to the Connections.  Make one or the other your default connection.  You will see several options available to you there.

Why is there even a network connection in there if you are using dialup?

I was able to make AOL the default and initially it seemed to help. But as I tried other downloads the problem returned.  I am able to monitor is the Task Manager Networking tab and I see that the connection is ok but the transmission just stops, down to 0% of bandwidth.  I can cancel the download and restart it but the transmission stops again at some other point.

currently the 'home' network is used to connect to the other PCs and share resources
