Difficulties networking Vista and XP

Question

I have been struggling with my home network in which a Dell Dimension 5150C acts as a file and print server and runs under XP Media Center Edition SP/3. The problem became acute when a Vista laptop (one is a Dell, one isn't) entered the house as I can't get the Vista machines to participate in the network. I think it is relevant that all users on the server are administrators with passwords. These users do not exist on the laptop clients. The three stages to fix the problem were Install the Link Layer Discovery Protocol, this is available with SP/3 and seems to be called the service advertising protocol under XP SP3, and I had to Install it as a service using the Network Connections, -> Appropriate NIC [right mouse] -> Properties applet. At this point I could see all the systems from the Vista system, but not browse the shared file systems. I was able to mount the server's shared folder using the 'map network drive' screen. This article in the Microsoft Knowledge base, entitled Error message when you try to access a Windows XP-based network computer: 'You might not have permission to use this network resource', explains how to use the Registry Editor to permit anonymous connections. I should have googled the error message. The Dell 5150C now behaves properly and also permits print services to be used. :emotion-1:

I have been struggling with trying to hookup a home network for 2 days. I figured out the LLDP protocol and when I downloaded and tried to install it, it told me that my version was newer. I then went to enable it and did not see it under the protocols list...all along its under the service list.

I enabled it and guess what!?! Everything works...lol...I would think that Microsoft could have let it be known that its a service, could have saved me a lot of hair pulling.
