Dimension 2400/Broadcom 440 Network Adapter

Hi gang.

Just signed up to the forum today to dig around for some info on fixing a network adapter problem, but so far I haven't seen anything in here that helped me out... so I have to ask for your help.

I've had to reformat the drive on a Dimension 2400 with WinXP Home due to some really hideous spyware a buddy got hit with. The reformat went smoothly however after restarting clean the Broadcom 440 network adapter is missing in action. The ethernet link is dead no matter how many times I've forced the machine to look for and update the drivers.

So far I have:
Checked the BIOS to make sure NIC is ON
Reinstalled/Installed all Broadcom 440 drivers from the Dell Resource CD
Installed R47822 Chipset driver

Nothing has resolved the problem. I must be missing some simple step. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appriciated, thanks!

Did you install the chipset drivers before attempting to install the any other drivers including the ethenet network adpater?  If you  have looked around this forum at all you would know that the chipset drivers must be installed before any other drivers can be installed, becuase I post this information at least a few times a day.

Hi Steve and thanks for the response.

I did not see any messages in the forum pertaining to a network adapter problem specifically mentioning an install of Chipset drivers prior to installing onboard ethernet drivers.

Everything from the Resource CD seems to be in it's proper place on the C drive but it just won't cooperate. If that particular chipset driver is required before installing anything else I wonder why the Dell CD roms did not automatically select it and install. So what's the proper order for these drivers to be loaded up?

The proper order is chipset drivers first, then all other drivers in any order.  You can wonder about the Dell Resource CD all you want, but it doesn't install things in the right order unless you tell it to.

Steve,

I didn't get your response until late today. I continued messing around with that Resource CD re-installing the Broadlink drivers. Magically it decided to finally work even though all the drivers had been previously extracted (multiple times). Seems the drivers on that disk are extremely quirky. Anyway I was glad to have it straighten itself out.

Stay cool.
