Say what?  Bad advice from Dell.

What protocols do you have installed for that adapter?

I don't see it as bad advice, but more like NO advice.

Control Panel ID's the card as Intel(R) PRO/100VE Network Connection. It is on the motherboard. The protocols are:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Client Service for NetWare
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

My 95/98 machines connect up to this server without problems. This machine is my first XP powered unit.

Getting the netware client to work with XP can be trial and error at first. It's not likely a Dell issue, but a Netware one. Novell has a help site that has a FAQ you should look at regarding the Novell client for XP.

Can you see the server if you dump the Novell client and use the Microsoft one?

Try NetBeui on both and see what you get.

I used to have this kind of problem way back then when windows 98 was new, we have windows 95 and when we updated our os to windows 98, we'd a hard time installing the setup disk of the client for netware disk, it always give us error. What i did was, i installed it manually, not getting the Netware protocol that came from the windows98 os, but from the client's setup disk which is from Netware Client Setup. Try to install the protocol of the netware client that came from the Netware Client setup disk manually - yes, this can be trial and error.
