When you go to the highspeed you will not use a modem like you are now.In fact unless you need the modem for faxing you can even remove it. The service provider whether DSL or Cable will supply a external modem that connects to their infrastracture. This modem will then connect to your computer either via a ethernet connection or a USB port.

Checking your manual shows you have an ethernet port. This would be the prefered method but you also have USM 2.0 connectors.

You don't upgrade the dial up modem for broadband.  You need to get a cable or DSL modem (depending on what type of service you sign up for) and normally the company providing the Internet connection will supply you with a modem or options for you to buy one.  I have yet to see a broadband modem that goes inside the computer like a dial up modem.  One reason is that you might want to hook multiple computers through that one high speed connection.

You normally use an Ethernet connection to connect to the modem and the D3000 has one.

i beleive the ethernet port was an option i didnt opt for when buying.  so i can swap out the dial up modem for a ethernet port?  the att/yahoo service is going to provide me with a dsl ethernet modem.  so that just connects to the ethernet port?

The D3000 comes with Ethernet standard.

ATT should supply you with a modem that will connect directly to the computer via the Ethernet.  Normally, the kit has everything you need.

You don't swap the dial up modem for anything.  You can keep it or not.  I keep mine for times when dial up is not working or to send/receive faxes.  I also use it to dial the phone from Outlook for making voice calls.
