Dimension 4550 Wake on LAN

I have a Dimension 4550 and I can't get wake-on-LAN to work. Any suggestions?

I have the A08 BIOS. I've disabled "Low Power Mode" and the BIOS setting for my NIC is "On w/ PXE." In the PXE setup menu I've enabled "Legacy OS Wakeup Support" since I run Linux. I send the magic packet from another machine on the same network and...nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

J

I successfully got a 4550 to WOL, but I don't remember the details. I do remember that each machine I tried seemed to only wake from certain states (e.g. might wake from standby but not power off).

I assume you are trying to wake from power off or hibernation. Do you see the link light active for the Ethernet connection?

I would try waking from standby first. You probably need to see the WOL options for the NIC in Windows device manager.

Yes, I've tried from S3 and S5, and yes, the light on the NIC is on. Wikipedia says the "legacy OS" setting might disable ACPI, so I tried changing that too (ie. tried it with that setting first enabled, then disabled). Still no luck.

Thanks for trying to help, Peter. Any other suggestions, anyone?

One more thing I can add is that when I was going through these same issues, no one on these boards offered any help. I suspect WOL is not very popular.

Good luck,
Peter
