Dimension 4600 Ethernet connection
Hi! My service Tag is G7BRN41. I have a Dimension 4600, I recently couldn't go past the Welcome screen, probably due to a virus, so I had to reinstall Windows XP Professional all over again. When I tried to network my Inspiron 8600 with my Dimension 4600, the desktop doesn't show a Local Area Connection icon anymore in the Network Connection window to tell me Ethernet cable is plugged. Previously the same cable worked fine. I installed: Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.5.00.1012, A13 but to no avail. Can you help me? Please & Thank You!

Jean B.,
Following installation of the chipset drivers you will have to install drivers for other system components, such as the ethernet network adapter. They should be on the Dell Resource CD that came with your system or they can be downloaded here. Check in Device Manager for any other devices that need drivers to be installed.

Hi !
I have a similar problem. I recently bought a Dim. 4600 to replace my Dim. 2400 (needed AGP-bus). I switched the harddisks (identical 80Gb disks) in order not to have to copy evertyhing from the 2400 to the 4600. Of course some drivers had to be (re)installed, due to differences in the configurations. Erverything is working fine except the Ethernetconnection. The system keeps saying 'LAN cable not connected' although it is plugged in and was working fine previously. The lights next to the LAN-port don't light up either. I tried some different PCI-NICs to bypass the on-board LAN-port, but the picture remains the same: no lights light op and cable is not seen. Have tried to reinstall the drivers, but no succes. Maybe some registrysetting is bugging me. Maybe anyone had a suggestion to help me out ? Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
Fred.
