Dimension 4600 Ethernet Problem

My Dimension 4600 gives me the message:  Local Area Connection Network Cable Unplugged.  I purchased this computer in January 2004 and I have always received this message.  It hasn’t been a problem as I used the USB instead of the Ethernet connection.  However, now I am trying to go wireless and it wants the Ethernet.  The devise manager says the Ethernet card is working fine.  I installed a different Ethernet card and it does not recognize any new hardware for it at all.  Any suggestions on how I can get this to work so I can go wireless (I do not have a wireless card in the computer) would be appreciated.

Sorry, I must have accidently submitted before I was done.  The second listing is for Motorola Surboard SB5100 USB Cable Modem.  There were no others listed.

At this point all I can think of is that there is a serious problem with your computer or with Windows.  You might want to think about reinstalling Windows.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

That's okay.  I appreciate your time.  I think I will try to install a wireless card in my desktop and see if I can use it that way.
